A Classic Picture-Perfect Beach Cottage on Nantucket
Given the extraordinary opportunity to preserve, restore, and reimagine this historic property, Allison Babcock Design undertook a comprehensive renovation of the original Wheel House cottage in Madaket, Nantucket. In close collaboration with the talented team at Emeritus LTD, they created a timeless family retreat that honors the spirit of Nantucket’s coastal heritage while bringing modern comfort and function to every space.
Nestled along the island’s scenic western edge, the cottage was redesigned with relaxed gatherings and multi-generational living in mind. The layout includes three bedrooms, one of which is a charming, custom-designed bunk room that comfortably sleeps four — perfect for children or weekend guests. To embrace the connection between indoors and outdoors, we incorporated two indoor-outdoor showers, ideal for rinsing off after a day at the beach or simply enjoying the open air
The interior design centers around a crisp white and blue palette — a classic Nantucket combination that evokes the surrounding sea and sky. White shiplap walls, painted wood ceilings, and bleached oak floors provide a light, breezy backdrop, while various shades of blue, from soft chambray to deep navy, are layered through textiles, upholstery, and artwork. Custom millwork, nautical-inspired lighting, and vintage accents were selected with care to echo the cottage’s original character and pay homage to the island’s seafaring roots.
Materiality and craftsmanship were essential throughout the process. Every detail, from the hand-forged cabinet hardware to the tongue-and-groove paneling, was chosen to feel authentic to both the house’s history and the broader architectural language of Nantucket. The result is a beautifully restored cottage that feels both rooted in its past and ready for generations of future family memories.
