House Tour-A Salt Marsh Beauty
Hi Friends,
I usually try to write my own overview of the House Tour that I am showcasing, but today’s feature designer, Paul Weber Architects wrote an incredible synopsis about the history of the home and the location of the Salt Marsh beauty.
The most obvious challenge to the renovation of this seaside residence was its location in the middle of a recognized flood plain. Present-day federal flood zone requirements made it mandatory that the building be raised and moved some 30 feet. The original structure survived the great hurricane of 1938 and in fact the high-water mark is noted on the dining room walls. A series of steps or levels mitigated the resulting change in elevation, while landscape designers blended the condition into the site. Overlooking the passage between the Elizabeth Islands and Woods Hole, the house reaps views of Woods Hole harbor to the north and Buzzards Bay to the southeast. This promoted the development of a semi-open plan with a bright, airy interior and generous window treatment. A new kitchen was designed to reflect and indulge the family’s casual summer lifestyle.
